Pietragavina Perricone 2015 is the result of a multi-year commitment aimed at the
safeguarding and enhancement of one of the oldest indigenous grape varieties in
Sicily.
In fact, at the end of the nineteenth century this vine was widely cultivated in the
western part of the island, and the grapes were used for the production of Marsala
Ruby. When, in the first half of the twentieth century, the consumption of Marsala
gradually decreased, the choice of winemakers was to replace it with other more
profitable and resistant black grape varieties.
Our passion and commitment to the enhancement of Sicilian vines led us to
rediscover a new identity in our ancient vineyard in Perricone. In 2002 our company
was already producing and bottling Pietragavina made up exclusively of Perricone
grapes.
Perricone is an ally of our well-being
A few months after its release on the market, our wine has been the focus of
important studies on the health properties of red wines. The collaboration with the
Research Consortium on Biological Risk in Agriculture, chaired by prof. Nicola
Gebbia, has allowed to establish that Perricone has a concentration of resveratrol and
piceatannol that is twice the concentration of the national red wines.
Piceatannol and resveratrol belong to the stilbenes family of the polyphenol group
and can be naturally found in various concentrations in Sicilian red grapes. Their
biological properties are characterized by anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
activities
Perricone di Sicilia, the rediscovery of an ancient vine
Today the extraordinary generosity of climates and soils contribute to the production
of an intense ruby red color capable of expressing seductive aromas of ripe fruit with
a spicy tone. Its aromas are reminiscent of a mixture of cherry, plum and currant jam
with fascinating notes of licorice,
Its taste is warm and voluptuous with acidity and tannins in polite evidence and a long
aromatic persistence. As for the pairing, Perricone has a warm and soft character
that goes well with roasted or braised red meat dishes, with spicy and tasty sauces
and condiments such as Caponata.
